ד"ר הדס בן-אלי היא ראשת החוג לאופטומטריה במרכז האקדמי הרב-תחומי ירושלים, מנהלת שירות האופטומטריה והביומטריה במרכז הרפואי הדסה–האוניברסיטה העברית, וחוקרת בכירה בתחום מדעי הראייה ובריאות העין. היא בעלת תואר ראשון במדעי האופטומטריה (בהצטיינות) מהמכללה האקדמית הדסה (כיום המרכז האקדמי הרב-תחומי ירושלים), תואר שני במדעי המוח וההתנהגות ודוקטורט בבריאות הציבור מהאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
מחקריה מתמקדים בשני תחומים מרכזיים: מחלות המקטע הקדמי של העין, ובהן מחלת העין היבשה, תסמונת שיוגרן, קטרקט ומחלות פני שטח העין; ובריאות הראייה בילדים, הכוללת בדיקות סקר ראייה, גילוי מוקדם של עין עצלה והפרעות תשבורת, אוריינות בריאות ושירותי בריאות העין. מחקריה משלבים בין אופטומטריה, רפואת עיניים, בריאות הציבור, אפידמיולוגיה ובינה מלאכותית, במטרה לשפר את האבחון, הטיפול וקבלת ההחלטות הקליניות.
במסגרת עבודת התואר השני פיתחה בדיקה פסיכופיזיקלית לאבחון מוקדם של ניוון מקולרי גילי באמצעות ראיית צבעים, אשר זיכתה אותה בפרס מטעם האגודה הישראלית לחקר הראייה. עבודת הדוקטורט שלה עסקה בזיהוי גורמי סיכון ובחקר מסלולים אימונולוגיים, גנטיים וסביבתיים משותפים למחלת העין היבשה, תסמונת שיוגרן ולימפומה מסוג B-cell Non-Hodgkin. מחקרים אלו בוצעו בשיתוף פעולה עם מחלקות העיניים, הראומטולוגיה, ההמטולוגיה ורפואת הפה במרכז הרפואי הדסה ופורסמו בכתבי עת מובילים ובכנסים בין-לאומיים.
ד"ר בן-אלי מובילה תכנית מחקר ענפה בשיתוף פעולה עם חוקרים ורופאי עיניים מהאוניברסיטה העברית ומהמרכז הרפואי הדסה, מוסדות אקדמיים מובילים בצפון אמריקה ובאירופה, לשכות הבריאות של משרד הבריאות, ותעשיית האופטיקה והמכשור הרפואי. מחקריה עוסקים בין היתר בשיפור תוצאות ניתוחי קטרקט, ביומטריה וחישובי עדשות תוך-עיניות, איכות חיים הקשורה לראייה, פיתוח כלי אבחון חדשים, יישומי בינה מלאכותית ברפואת עיניים ומדיניות בריאות בתחום בריאות העין.
בנוסף לפעילותה המחקרית, ד"ר בן-אלי עוסקת בפיתוח והובלת תוכניות הוראה והכשרה מתקדמות לאופטומטריסטים, רופאי עיניים ואנשי מקצועות הבריאות. היא מרצה באופטומטריה, פתולוגיה אוקולרית, ביוסטטיסטיקה ושיטות מחקר, מנחה סטודנטים לתארים מתקדמים ומובילה שיתופי פעולה אקדמיים וקליניים בארץ ובעולם לקידום המחקר, ההוראה ומקצוע האופטומטריה בישראל.
