Congratulations to Dr. Vered Uziel from the School of Management on the publication of her new article, “The Known Unknown? Passenger Perspectives on the Potential of Coproduction to Address Gender Inequality in Public Transport,” in the international journal Research in Transportation Business & Management.
How can the public sector develop innovative services that are better tailored to the needs of the public? One approach is to incorporate citizens’ knowledge and experience into decision-making and service development processes.
The article explores this question through the case of gender inequality in public transportation. It examines the potential of coproduction—active citizen participation in the design and improvement of public services—as a tool for identifying needs and developing more responsive and inclusive solutions.
The study, based on six focus groups involving 40 women and men from Tel Aviv–Yafo and Beersheba, found that passengers identify gender-related gaps in areas such as personal safety, comfort, and flexibility of travel. However, these needs rarely reach the organizations responsible for providing the service.
The study highlights that innovation in the public sector is not limited to technology. It also requires listening to the public, identifying their needs, and translating citizens’ knowledge into changes in services and policy.
Public participation and digital tools can help create more innovative, inclusive, and responsive public services.
