New Research Explores Vision Therapy for Vision Problems Following Repeated Sports Injuries

Congratulations to Susanna Rotenberg, a graduate of the International Master's Program in Optometry from Iceland, and to her supervisors, Dr. Liat Gantz, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Optometry and Head of the Research Authority, and Dr. Rachel Eichler, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Optometry, on the publication of their article, Vision Therapy for Oculomotor Dysfunctions After Repeated Sports-Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Case Series, in Optometry and Visual Performance.

Based on Susanna's master's thesis, the study presents a series of cases involving patients who experienced repeated mild traumatic brain injuries as a result of sports-related injuries. Many of these patients developed undiagnosed vision problems that affected the way their eyes focused.

Following a course of vision therapy—a structured rehabilitation program for the visual system, similar in concept to physical therapy—the patients showed improvements in both their symptoms and clinical measures of visual function. The findings suggest that vision therapy may be beneficial even for patients with repeated injuries and when treatment begins long after the original brain injuries occurred.
