Congratulations to Dr. Orit Bershtling from the School of Social Work on the publication of her new article, “Cultural Translation: Complementary Framework for Cross-Cultural Social Work,” in the journal Journal of Ethnic & Cultural Diversity in Social Work.C

The article explores the concept of “cultural translation” as a tool for understanding professional encounters between groups with different worldviews. It examines interactions between secular social work lecturers and Haredi (ultra-Orthodox Jewish) students, and presents two strategies for conveying professional knowledge: emphasizing similarities between the cultures, or recognizing differences and creating a dialogue between academic knowledge and religious knowledge. The article argues that the second approach enables mutual learning and the creation of a shared space between the cultures.
